Likely depicting a concubine, it is evocative of Ingres’ Grande Odalisque in its subject matter and is clear reference to Venus with the pose and presence of the mirror. In late 18th century France, the Orientalist style emerged following Napoleon’s invasion of Egypt as the imagination of artists turned toward the Near East.
