A walnut table, known as an Italian-style table from the Loire Valley, rests on nine turned columns with Ionic capitals and a molded base supported by a Lorraine cross stretcher. The corners are decorated with inverted spinning tops. Renaissance period, c. 1560 – 1580. The capitals are decorated with delicate floral motifs and carved mythological creatures resembling gryphons. A ninth column stands in the centre of the vertical bar providing additional stability and distinguishes the table from the more common seven feet version of this classic French design. The top of the table is a later 19th century addition of oak.
Dimensions: 27.2” H x 49.2” W x 27.5” D
Condition: Good, wear consistent with age and use. Replacement of one of the spinning tops.
