18th Century Silver Sponge Ball Holder

A handsome 18th century silvered bronze sponge ball holder with a pierced lid decorated with flowers and foliage. Originally designed to hold a bather’s sponge, the aerated lid allowed the sponge to dry between uses. These beautiful silver works mark an increased interest in personal hygiene among the upper classes. Similar pieces can be found in the collections of the Hotel de la Marine and the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
