Stunning 18th century red chalk figure study of a hand with fingers in a gestural pose.

Framed under Museum glass in an antique 18th century gold gilt frame. Either French or Italian in origin.

Condition: Good, wear to frame and loss of gilt

Dimensions: 11 3/4” H x 10 3/4” W

Image Size: 6 3/4” W x 5 1/2” H

Red chalk, also known as sanguine, is a reddish-brown color given its name because it resembles the color of dried blood. The word is French, derived from the Italian sanguigna, originally from the Latin “sanguis” and is often made from red ochre.
