18th Century Nevers Orange Pot

A rare 18th century Nevers faience orange pot in decor de camaïeu bleu on a pied douche (a raised round base), from the mid 18th century of unusual form with scroll handles. The bottom has three punches for drainage holes. These types of pots were used to hold orange trees and other citrus plants so that they could be moved from outside to inside to the orangerie during the cooler months to keep the plants warm.

Dimensions: 9 1/2” H, 9 1/2” Diameter

Condition: Good, minor wear consistent with age

About Nevers

Nevers was a center for tin-glazed earthenware production in France, known as faience, between 1580 to the early 19th century. It is distinguashable by its milky opaque color which was an effect of adding tin oxide to the glaze.
